This was an excellent 'hard-core' flight sim for it's time. Crystal defenders. Because it was modelling aircraft that were inherently slower in flight, it was (imo) still an accessible and enjoyable game for the more casual player. But it had fun stuff for those more interested in accurate flight models as well, since each plane's more famous 'quirk's were fairly well depicted. For example, the Fokker Dr.I Tri-plane having an awesome climb rate but could more easily put you into a flat-spin if you weren't careful - and the Sopwith Camel having a great turn rate if you turned with the engine's torque - to the right side.Anyway, my comments are from distant memories of the game, so I don't recall all details. But if it runs decent (or at all) on your system, and you can stand the low-res, low-quality graphics, it should still be a blast because I'm not aware of very many games today that give you a chance to lead your own dawn patrol across the trenches of The Great War. I loved the original and bought the 2nd when I saw it. It seemed to have some glitches so I put it away in hopes for a patch. Brought it out again a year ago to see if I could get it running and it was a no go.

I was really bummed about it until now. I've been busy all day so I'm looking forward to sitting down and playing it. I did notice that when you take off the plane starts to lean to the left. So I'm hoping that it's just a trim problem and not another bug. I'll hook up my joystick and see. Dreadcog: I did notice that when you take off the plane starts to lean to the left.

So I'm hoping that it's just a trim problem and not another bug. I'll hook up my joystick and see. That may be the engine torque modelling. Picture this: Engine churning in one direction, along with the prop.

The directional force there is why the Camel (for example) turned.much. better in one direction than the other. (I think it turn towards the right/clockwise best)But another reason could be a game bug.

I really can't tell from here. It's been many years since I've run a flight sim. And probably longer since I had the Red Baron games. AesirRising: That may be the engine torque modelling. Red Baron II is a video game for the PC, developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra On-Line. It is the follow-up to the flight simulation Red Baron, released in 1990. Red Baron II was released in 1997.

Gameplay[edit]

The game features four modes of play: Fly Now (a quick combat mode); Single Mission which includes several missions and a mission generator to create new ones;[1] Campaign mode, which features one of the only truly dynamic campaigns in a modern flight simulator and which replicated combat on the Western Front of Europe from 1916 through 1918; and peer to peer online play.

The game features many German, British, and French combat aircraft of World War I, and features pseudo-realistic flight physics and mechanics such as weapon malfunction, flak, engine damage, and pilot injury.

Reception[edit]

Next Generation reviewed the PC version of the game, rating it four stars out of five, and stated that 'Overall, Red Baron II is a fine addition to the series, and despite some small, technical shortcomings, it establishes itself as one of the most entertaining flight experiences on the market today.'[2]

The editors of Computer Gaming World nominated Red Baron II's Full Canvas Jacket mod for their 2003 'Flight Simulation of the Year' award, which ultimately went to Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight.[3]

Coupon[edit]

Some copies of the game included a coupon for 75 cents off a 12-inch Red Baron pizza. In 2014, YouTube user Clint Basinger of Lazy Game Reviews found the coupon bundled in with the game and after finding out the coupon had no expiration date he took the coupon to a Food Lion and bought himself a Red Baron pizza with the coupon.[4]
