There have been several concerted efforts to transition the first-person shooter into the MMO space. To be perfectly blunt, the vast majority of them have failed. It's not because the games have been bad, mind you - many of them have been quite good. The problem has been the huge difference in the player bases between the two types of games. While both tend to be very dedicated, shooter players haven't always shown that they've been in love with the idea of a persistent world. When the merge has worked, though, the games have been excellent. One good example of how an MMO/Shooter can be done right is Planetside 2.

Unique Style of Shooter That Works Well

When you start to poke at Planetside 2, you're going to see a lot more of its shooter heritage than you'll see of its MMO roots. The game is a shooter at heart, and that's for the best - if it tried to compete with games like World of Warcraft, it would probably fail. The game is, as always, divided into a few different factions and a number of different classes. From there, you figure out how you want to proceed and jump into a fairly content-rich world. Everything's going to come down to your twitch speed at the end, but that's how it should be in an MMO. It's a good fit for the genre and it's amazing that it's still doing something different all these years later.

If you're looking for a downside to Planetside 2, it's age. This game came out in 2012, and it hasn't exactly aged well. It's probably the best shooter/MMO to make it out of the big MMO crash, but that doesn't mean it isn't showing its age. In fact, you're going to see most of the problems with the game when you look at things that were actually innovative five years ago. A great deal of what it initially did well is being done better in pure shooters, and that's a shame. Planetside 2 just hasn't changed enough to retain its crown.

Free to Play, No Need to Spend Money

As a note, Planetside 2 is a free to play game. Fortunately, it is a free to play game that's done incredibly well. You can unlock everything relevant in the game if you are willing to put in the time, so there's no real need to spend money. If you do spend money, you'll get to level a bit faster and have a few more characters, but nothing game-breaking. It's one of the better examples of how F2P can work without overwhelming the game.

Conclusion

Planetside 2 is a relic of the days when MMOs really wanted to be experimental. It is a solid first-person shooter on its own, and the persistent elements really do make it worth playing. If you want to really enjoy a unique game in the MMO space and you don't want to be overwhelmed by constant calls to spend money, this is a game worth playing. It's getting a bit long in the tooth, but that doesn't mean it isn't still a great deal of fun to play.
